MARKET / TREND

PET makes its mark

PET makes its mark

In countries such as Mexico or India, whose bottled water- and soda-consuming middle classes are developing fast, annual growth rates for PET are respectively around the 5% and 15% marks.

Lightweight, cost-effective, sturdy… PET -or Polyethylene Terephtalate- is gradually ousting glass on the beverage market, in particular in emerging countries where consumption is rocketing. Here’s why…

By 2017, use of PET for manufacturing bottles should grow twice as fast as the beverage industry in the Middle East and emerging countries. In countries such as Mexico or India, whose bottled water- and soda-consuming middle classes are developing fast, annual growth rates for this plastic material are respectively around the 5% and 15% marks. "Several factors explain the choice for changing over from glass to PET, says Markem-Imaje Beverage Market Manager Sylvain Clément. With the increase in transport costs, lighter and unbreakable PET is much easier to circulate. Consequently, industrialists realized that PET gave much faster return on investment than glass, at a time when new investments are necessary to keep up with the current trend towards increased size of unit doses."

Customized marking solutions
For leaders of the beverage market, this massive changeover from glass to plastic means that marking solutions have to be adapted. The aim is to come up with a technology able to print visibly and cleanly, without any risk of piercing, and at the same time keep pace with the growing production speeds for bottling. "Markem-Imaje proposes two solutions. Laser, with its new SmartLase C range, for highly legible code printing with hi-level contrast able to meet large runs of 100,000 bottles per hour. For runs up to 42,000 bottles per hour, we advise opting for a more cost-effective ink-jet printer."
The latest model can be used both on PET lines and glass or beverage cans and provides a single (printer/ink) solution regardless of container, thereby ensuring optimum flexibility and avoiding operator-triggered supply chain errors in ink.
In addition, CoLOS monitoring and traceability softwares save time and limit coding error risks when changing format… Ideal for those who are not (yet) PET lovers.
